About the role

This is a part-time, permanent role within Croydon Registration Service, reporting to the Team Leader for Registration Services. It combines reception duties, customer service, and administrative support across a range of registration and citizenship functions.

The role sits at the public-facing heart of the Register Office, requiring someone who can move between administrative tasks and direct customer interactions with equal confidence. You will work across ceremonies, certificate processing, and compliance activity, supporting colleagues and external partners to maintain service quality.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Welcoming and assisting customers visiting the Register Office and responding to enquiries in person, by telephone, and via email
  • Booking appointments, ceremonies, and registration services, and processing payments, refunds, and financial transactions accurately
  • Providing information and guidance on registration and citizenship processes, including marriages, civil partnerships, and citizenship ceremonies
  • Processing certificate applications and online orders while maintaining accurate customer records in compliance with data protection requirements
  • Liaising with internal departments, government agencies, and external partners to support service delivery and contributing to service improvement initiatives

The role requires flexibility, including occasional evenings, weekends, and events outside normal office hours. You will be expected to wear formal workwear when supporting marriage, civil partnership, and citizenship ceremonies, and to travel independently within and occasionally outside the borough.

About You

Croydon Registration Service is looking for someone who is organised, adaptable, and committed to delivering excellent customer service in a specialist public-sector environment. This role suits a candidate with direct experience of registration work who can apply legislation accurately and handle sensitive interactions with care.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have knowledge and awareness of Registration Services and related legislation, including regulations and procedures applicable to registration work
  • Have experience working within Registration Services and in a customer service environment
  • Have experience processing payments and refunds accurately
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to communicate effectively both face-to-face and over the telephone
  • Show strong administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise competing demands and manage a busy workload
  • Be able to interpret legislation and apply procedures accurately, making sound decisions independently where required
  • Possess public speaking and presentation skills suitable for supporting ceremonies and formal occasions
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team while also being capable of working independently
